While New Years Day Is Sleeping

While new years day is sleeping on a run-down red-eye train

a lonely man sits staring at the smoke-stained window pane

In his reflection he can see that streaking raindrops look like tears

that fight against the wind until they yield and disappear

A week ago his home town seemed so honest and secure

he always had believed that everyone was true and pure

Betrayed by those he trusted most he had no choice but flee

though love is blind eventually the eyes will learn to see

Oh Vera, you are fading more with every passing day

like a shore receding further faraway

(and) though nothing hurts as much as when your first love some day ends

in his retreat he left behind his innocence

While new years day is sleeping he keeps staring at the night

and when they cross the mountains he begins to see the light

And here in Reno every job (he gets) involves a bucket and a mop

and he’s been sleeping in the restroom of an all-night coffee shop

and though he’s always out of money he keeps doing what he can

and he’s starting to resemble an emancipated man

And gone is Mister Patsy, the (constant) loser in her game

He’s a stranger among strangers and he chooses his own name

and one day he’ll realize when he (finally) gets beyond the shame

(that) he deserved more than he left behind when he got on that train

Oh Vera, you are fading more with every passing day

like a shore receding further faraway

and though nothing hurts as much as when your first love some day ends

in his retreat he left behind his innocence

While new years day was sleeping he (finally) broke free from her chain

and beyond that mountain range he found his loss became his gain

and beyond that mountain range he found his loss became his gain
